Wimbledon, London

A family looking to create more living space and a master bedroom suite within a very compact semi-detached house in Wimbledon approached NVDC Architects with their brief in 2015.

Working closely with the client and the local council planning department over a 3-year period NVDC developed a two-storey stepped extension that maximised the potential of the property while addressing planning concerns on overshadowing & overlooking in a densely developed neighbourhood.

The form and shape of the extension were driven by pushing the boundaries in respect of overshadowing and overlooking as well as the client’s desire to create an open plan, light-filled living space whilst forming a strong connection to the rear garden.

The external materials were chosen carefully to create a contextual language for the extension whilst the building form is articulated as an unashamedly contemporary addition to the overall house composition.

A message from our client:

“NVDC Architects are a very professional and accomplished architect's practice whom I have hired on a number of different projects, ranging from the high end refurbishment of a property in Glasgow in 2009, a complete house refurbishment in Wimbledon in 2012 which involved structural changes and more recently an ongoing project involving the design of a rear two storey extension to my house.

Their attention to detail, creativity and ability to interpret from a rough sketch of what we were trying to achieve to a full set of architectural plans has been very impressive.

NVDC have always exceeded my expectations and also assume responsibility for resolving many of the complications involving planning regulations, structural engineering and the builders you choose to realise your project.

I am certain that without the guidance and services of NVDC, our projects would not been as successful in coming to life as they have been. Thanks!”
