Kilmardinny Crescent

Our client’s main objective was to develop two houses for the speculative market that would be contextual, life-enhancing and display the best of contemporary open plan living while working to a tight budget. The project site contained an existing detached house located on a corner plot at Kilmardinny Crescent, Bearsden. The main aim was to maximise the land by demolishing the existing single dwelling and creating two new detached houses within the plot.

Although the corner plot was of reasonably generous proportions, taking two separate access points off the main road to serve each of the houses while providing each with their own private garden proved to be the biggest challenge. These factors became key drivers for the design of each of the two house types. As well as creating a functional and practical layout on site it was important that each of the houses had its own character with contemporary design features suited to modern living. Each dwelling was designed with the aim of creating light-filled spaces and forming strong connections between the indoors and outdoors. Accommodation in each included an open plan family living, dining, kitchen area, a separate reception room for privacy, a downstairs cloakroom, four double bedrooms with fitted wardrobes, two en-suite shower rooms, and an upstairs family bathroom.

We have achieved these objectives by developing site-specific house-type designs that are contextual and take their cues and inspiration from traditional house designs and town planning. By combining this with contemporary spaces and layouts NVDC Architects have created two highly contextual bespoke and well-designed homes with large areas of glazing along with clever and efficient planning and design.
